Churches

Alexandria area churches provide more than a place to worship and find fellowship. They are the sources of social activity, culture, education and community services. Many have as long a history and tradition in the community as the city itself and stand as architectural landmarks adding to the charm and personality of Alexandria.

The earliest record of a church service held in Alexandria was in 1859 when the Reverend Benjamin Whipple was consecrated as the first Missionary Bishop of Minnesota. He held that Episcopal service at the home of Charles Cook. Most early church services were held in homes until a church building could be financed and built.

In the early 1860s, a visiting New Jersey clergyman, Rev. Spotswood, held services in the cabins of Alexandria’s founders, the Kinkead brothers.
